Become a One-Year Member:
Volunteer to be a one-year Committee member. While we have already selected our 1 year members for the 2020-21 school year, we are now searching for members for the 2021-22 school year. Interested? Please complete THIS FORM. For more information about responsibilities of a 1 year member, take a look at THIS DOCUMENT. Please not that the committee is only open to MASL members. We will contact you via email about the status of your possible membership by the end of May. Too much? Not enough time for that sort of commitment? Please consider signing up to be a Reader Selector!
Become a Reader Selector:
Help choose the final 15 nominees by reading as many titles as possible from the list of 25 preliminary titles (a minimum of 8-12 titles suggested) between the release of the preliminary list in mid-August through early January. Reader Selectors rate those titles on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the best). Votes will be due via the MASL website by 11:59 pm on the second Tuesday of January. Reader/Selectors can be anyone - students, teachers, librarians, parents, etc. Interested? Please fill out THIS GOOGLE FORM or simply read and rate by the deadline. Contact any committee member with questions. We will send you an email with the summer list and another with the final list of 25 for consideration in early August if you do sign up via the Google form. The titles will be available on this website and via the MASL web page.
Encourage Students to Participate in the Book Trailer Contest
Promote the annual Gateway Book Trailer Contest with your readers, media publication classes, artists and budding film makers! Book trailers will be submitted by students across the state. Winning trailers will be published on the MASL website for all readers and librarians to use in book promotion throughout the year. A published film creator? So cool. For details, including guidelines, deadlines, scoring guide, release forms, etc., see THIS LINK to the contest on the MASL webpage. Good luck!

One Year Committee members must be high school librarians and members of MASL prior to the committee selection. They meet with the committee for the first time in August. They are able to voice their opinions about the preliminary list at that meeting. The preliminary list is given to one year committee members in May. One Year Committee members are responsible for reading as many of the donated/publisher titles as possible. Members on average read between 100-150 titles each. They attend four committee meetings (August, February, April, and August). The April meeting is at Spring Conference, usually on the morning of the day that the conference officially begins. Although their main responsibility is to read and rate titles, there are a variety of other committee obligations including a reader/selector obligation in the Fall. Feel free to contact any of the committee members if you have questions.
Get Your Students Involved at the State Level:
Gather a group of strong students and ask them to be reader-selectors. Reader-Selectors help choose the final 15 nominees by reading as many as possible of the 25 preliminary titles (suggested minimum 8-12 titles) between the release of the preliminary list (early August) and early in January. Then they rate those titles on a scale of 1-5 (5 being the best). Students ratings are given more weight than adult ratings.
Build a Gateway Readers Award Program at your school:
1. Get your hands on the books:
3. Host a Voting Party or offer incentives for voters.

Build a Gateway Readers Award Program at your school:
1. Get your hands on the books:
- Try to get a copy of each of the Gateway titles for your library. If you’re strapped for cash, contact a local business to see if they would donate the books. You would be surprised at how many businesses and individuals are willing to donate 15 books. You can also apply for a grant that is awarded by the Gateway Committee every year to at least one library. Book grant applications are available mid February - April 1st.
- Partner with your public library. Ask that they purchase copies of the books. Also ask them if they’d be willing to visit your library to help you promote the books. Most public libraries are very willing to work with schools and some will even visit your library.
3. Host a Voting Party or offer incentives for voters.
